# Notes

Notes are your Markdown files, opened and edited in Emm.

## Open and create notes

With Emm focused, press **Command+N** to create a new Note in the selected Notes folder, or **Command+O** to open an existing Markdown file, including one outside the current Notes folder. Pending edits save before switching; cancelling leaves the current window and document unchanged.

Choose your Notes folder, new-note destination and daily-note destination in **Emm → Settings → Notes**. Each destination is one folder; missing creation folders are created on use.

## Include repository documents

In **Settings → Notes → Add to index**, choose a repository folder, or type its full path and click **Add**. Markdown files in that folder and its children appear in search and `[[link]]` completion. Hidden folders and symlinks are skipped. **Remove** takes a folder out of the index without deleting anything.

New notes still use your new-note destination. Adding an index folder does not enroll it in Notes sync: keep repository documents outside your shared Notes folder and use Git to deliver them. Configure the local repository path on each computer. Files already inside an enrolled Notes folder still sync; indexing is not an exclusion rule.

These settings belong to the selected Notes folder on this computer. Changing the list does not switch your project or move files. An already-open document stays open after its folder is removed.

## Word count

With a Notes window focused, choose **View → Show Word Count** to show the count in the lower-right footer; **Hide Word Count** turns it off. It is off by default, and your choice applies to Notes on this computer across projects. It never changes the Markdown file.

A nonempty selection in the document body shows the selected count; otherwise the footer counts the whole Markdown source, including unsaved edits. Words are whitespace-separated tokens containing a letter or number. Standalone Markdown markers and punctuation do not count; formatting, links and code are not stripped. A selected word fragment counts once. The filename/title field is excluded. Agents can inspect the setting with `emm settings get notes_word_count --help`.

Counting runs in the background. After an edit or selection change, the footer may briefly show **Counting…** until the current count is ready.

## Keep several notes open

With a Notes window focused, choose **File → Duplicate Notes Window** (**Option+Command+N**), then open another file in the new window. Each window keeps its own back/forward history. Closing one leaves the others open. Right-click a Markdown file link in Notes or an issue to choose **Open in New Window** or **Copy Path**.

## Editing and links

Write plain Markdown. Use `[[Note name]]` to link to a note in the selected Notes folder or an added index folder. For other files, use standard Markdown links such as `[Report](repo/docs/My%20Report.md)` or `[Report](<repo/docs/My Report.md>)`, and resolve relative links from the open note’s folder. In issue descriptions and chat, relative links instead start at the project folder containing `emm.db`. Raw paths in prose or backticks stay plain text.

## Sharing Notes

Sharing Notes is explicit and separate from saving. Enroll a Markdown folder so its files are available to project members; only copies you have configured download or upload. See [Sharing](sharing.md) for the setup commands and what happens next.

Supported images in the configured project Notes folder can sync alongside Markdown. New project Notes and issue image pastes share its `attachments/` folder. Notes outside that folder, and their images, stay personal and local. See [Sharing](sharing.md) for enrollment and limits.
